TWENTY-FOUR

DERR WOULD PLOT MURDER on whoever pounded on his goddamn door if it didn’t require so much thought this early in the morning. Grabbing his cell off the nightstand, he stared at the digital readout, blinking to clear his vision. Eight in the fucking morning.

Someone is going to die. At the very least they required a punch straight in the kisser.

Flopping back on his pillow, he groaned and put the heels of his palms into his eyes. Kallie made little squeaking noises before snuggling into his armpit, her little head resting on his shoulder.

That’s when the incessant door bell ringing began. He looked at his dog and her eye whiskers twitched.

“Goddamn. Motherfuck.”

Kallie jumped up and hit the floor as he kicked the covers off. Stomping down the stairs like a little kid, he imagined he killed the person on the other side of that goddamn door a hundred times, getting off legally in each scenario he murdered them.

Whoever is on the other side of that nagging doorbell and fist hammering is a former friend. Everyone in his life knew the hours he kept. Eight in the morning was rarely on his radar. And whoever it was had to have the code to get through his gate. After today, the individual could no longer be a trusted friend. He couldn’t have this type of negativity this early in the morning.

Derr padded across the tiled floor on bare feet, Kallie at his side her feet pattering along too. Good thing he’d gone to bed in his underwear or the intruder would get an eyeful.

As he curled his fingers on the door handle, he took a deep breath to calm his agitation. Yep, just as he expected the attempt failed.

He snatched the door open, hoping he wore a terrifying scowl because he felt petrifying.

Tab smiled at him. The smile irritated the piss out of him. What the fuck was her problem?

“Someone dead?” Clearly everyone that mattered lived or she wouldn’t be smiling.

“Nope.” Her chipper attitude agitated him further.

“Come back in five hours.” He slammed the door in her face, hoping she’d get the message loud and clear through his actions. Striding away from the door, he’d managed to make it almost to the stairs when she began to pound on the wood once again and laid into the doorbell at the same time. “God, please give me the power to resist killing her.” He looked heavenward while trudging onward to the stairs. “She has a fucking key,” he muttered to himself. To Tab he yelled, “The door isn’t locked.”

He ignored her when she entered his house, but instead went upstairs to his bedroom. Tab knew her way around and if he was lucky, she’d be gone by the time he woke up.

Falling face down onto his wonderful bed, he curled his pillow beneath his cheek as Kallie curled up against his belly. He rubbed his cheek against the pillow, finding the right spot and let his brain go silent again. Just as he dozed back to sleep, Tab flopped down beside him jarring him awake once more.
